Doñana, a protected area

The Doñana Natural Area

The Doñana Natural Area is located in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, between the exits of the Tinto and Guadalquivir Rivers. Extensive, pristine beaches bathed by the Atlantic Ocean form its southern boundary. Several municipalities in the provinces of Huelva, Seville, and Cádiz contribute to sum up Doñana.
The Doñana National and Natural Park encompasses over 100,000 protected hectares. The town of Matalascañas borders the National Park directly, making it a magnificent access point and departure to visit its coastline.
The Doñana Natural Area is considered one of the most important protected natural areas in Europe. A key crossroads for migratory bird routes between the African and European continents, it also represents the last refuge for numerous endangered species.
Doñana's uniqueness stems from the great diversity of biotopes and species it harbors. In addition to the marshland, an ecosystem characterized by its high productivity, a number of exceptional environmental units converge here: the beach, the shifting dunes and the corrals; the woodland with juniper, cork oak and pine forests, grouped under the local name of "cotos"; numerous lagoons scattered among the vegetation; and a transition zone that both links and separates them all, the vera.
Comarca de Doñana
The area of the Natural Park located between the towns of Matalascañas and Mazagón, known as Médanos del Asperillo, is one of the most beautiful and unique parts of Doñana. It is made of fossilized dunes perched atop impressive coastal cliffs of compacted sand, at the foot of which lie magnificent, semi-virgin beaches with a constantly changing landscape. Access to this area is usually restricted, and only walking is permitted. Our company, Doñana Hípica el Pasodoble, offers equestrian tours precisely through this area, allowing visitors to enjoy unforgettable scenery and experiences.
